The Bike & Pedestrian Task Force of the City of Asheville has been counting bicyclists and pedestrians for the past seven years.  This information helps city staff determine where people are riding bikes and walking to decide where improvements need to be made and to see how well the new facilities are being used.  Information is also being sent to an outside organization which is developing information on communities biking and walking facilities.

The second full week of September is when Asheville’s annual bike and pedestrian statistics are being collected. Counts take place during daily commute times from 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM on the following days:

  • Tuesday, September 12
  • Wednesday, September 13
  • Thursday, September 14
  • Saturday September 16

The task force is seeking volunteers to count bicycle and pedestrian traffic along several greenway locations in the city. There will be a number of counting positions/sites available to choose from as well as time slots. There will also be a training session at UNC-Asheville just before the counting sessions begin.

If you are interested in helping to collect this valuable information, please send an email to [email protected] as soon as possible.
